Format:
Fifteen-minute introduction that addresses the need for basing local programming on local data and offers case studies of two R1 institutions: one in L2 writer programming, one in writing center tutor training.
Fifteen-minute activity in which participants use guided questions to determine current knowledge about L2 writers at their own institution and current data practices within their own program, and then identify areas for growth around collecting and analyzing data and transforming it into deliverables.
Thirty-minute activity during which participants gain hands-on experience in small groups with case study data (or bring their own to use): analyzing different forms of data (e.g., usage spreadsheets, survey graphs, writers’ reflections), and using data to brainstorm targeted programs for L2 writers (e.g., writing groups structured to address confidence as well as ability) or professional development for tutors (e.g., guided questions to help tutors compare assumptions about L2 writers with survey results from actual writers). Groups then reflect on applications to individual contexts.
Final twenty-minute plenary discussion for cross-institutional dialogue about data-collection methods and ideas for transforming data into practical programming.
